Restrictive Practice Implementation

Safe, Respectful and Rights-Focused Support

Where a participant's Behaviour Support Plan includes a regulated restrictive practice, its implementation must occur within strict safeguards and regulatory requirements.

Ardor Care supports participants where authorised restrictive practices form part of their approved support arrangements.

Our approach is centred on protecting the participant's rights, dignity and wellbeing while ensuring workers understand and follow the participant's Behaviour Support Plan, relevant authorisations and required safeguards.

Restrictive practices are only implemented where the necessary requirements are in place and in accordance with the participant's current Behaviour Support Plan, relevant authorisation requirements and applicable NDIS and state requirements. We also work alongside Behaviour Support Practitioners and the participant's support team to support the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices wherever possible.

How Ardor Care Can Support

Where a regulated restrictive practice forms part of a participant's support arrangements, Ardor Care can support with:

  • Implementation of authorised restrictive practices within our scope
  • Following strategies outlined in the participant's Behaviour Support Plan
  • Consistent implementation of approved strategies and safeguards
  • Participant-specific worker training and guidance
  • Monitoring and documenting the use of restrictive practices
  • Required incident and restrictive practice reporting
  • Collaboration with Behaviour Support Practitioners and the broader support team
  • Supporting proactive and preventative strategies
  • Supporting approaches aimed at reducing and eliminating the use of restrictive practices over time

Support is provided according to the participant's individual circumstances, current plans, applicable authorisations and regulatory requirements.

Trained and Informed Support Workers

Workers involved in implementing a participant's Behaviour Support Plan need to understand the individual, the strategies contained within the plan and any specific requirements associated with an authorised restrictive practice.

Ardor Care works with Behaviour Support Practitioners and other relevant professionals to ensure workers receive appropriate participant-specific information, training and guidance before implementing the relevant strategies.

Clear documentation, communication and ongoing review are important parts of maintaining a consistent approach across the participant's support team.

Supporting Positive Behaviour Support

Restrictive practice implementation should not be viewed in isolation.

We work alongside the participant's Behaviour Support Practitioner and broader support network to implement proactive and preventative strategies contained within the Behaviour Support Plan.

Our role is to support the participant in a way that respects their rights, choices and dignity while contributing to the broader goal of reducing and, wherever possible, eliminating the use of restrictive practices.

Working With the Support Team

Effective Behaviour Support Plan implementation requires communication and consistency across the people involved in a participant's support.

We work collaboratively with participants, families, Behaviour Support Practitioners, Support Coordinators, allied health professionals and other providers where appropriate.

Where there are changes to the participant's Behaviour Support Plan, strategies, authorisations or support requirements, we work with the relevant members of the support team to ensure these changes are understood and appropriately implemented.
